The ancient equine superfood rediscovered.
The Cunning of the Mongols Meets 21st Century Bio-technology
Genghis Khan and his Mongols changed history when they thundered across Eurasia in the 13th century. Riding up to 50 miles in a day, the 'devil horsemen' out-fought, out-thought and out-rode all comers. On one campaign, the Mongols had to abandon a large number of spent war horses in a forest. When they passed by the forest weeks later, they were astounded to find the horses they had left to die restored to health. When the horses saw their riders, they charged out of the forest and rejoined the cavalry with much screaming, kicking and rearing. As it turns out, Genghis Khan had left those horses in a Sea Buckthorn forest. From that time on, the Mongols revered Sea Buckthorn as the 'holy fruit' and made it a staple of horse and human diets.
Sea Buckthorn, or hippophae rhamnoides, is referenced in ancient Tibetan medicine texts including the RGYUD BZI (THE FOUR BOOKS OF PHARMACOPOEIA) that date back to the Tang Dynasty, 618 – 907 AD.
The ancient Greeks fed Sea Buckthorn to their racehorses, and Pegasus was rumored to have preferred the bright orange berries, too. Like the Mongols, the war stories of the Greeks also include those in which injured horses fed Sea Buckthorn recovered, some to greater fitness than before. In ancient Greek texts, writings about Sea Buckthorn are attributed to Theophrastus and Dioskorid.
Today, Sea Buckthorn has been used as a food for humans and animals for 2000 years with no known cases of toxicity, adverse reactions or drug interactions.
